What to wear to a summer wedding - in collaboration with ASOS

Ding Dong, Ding Dong... Wedding season is upon us, the invitations are rolling in, and if you have one coming up in the next few weeks; this post might be just the thing you need. Dressing for a special occasion is tricky in itself, but add the pressure of the fact it's during a potentially hot summer, you might be struggling to get the perfect look.

This is where I come in, always on hand to help you out...how nice am I? Ahaha but seriously, I understand how tricky it is to dress for a summer wedding, especially if it's a destination wedding.

There are a few things to take into account when dressing for a summer wedding. The heat, being the number one factor. Now, if you're anything like me, you might struggle with wearing overly synthetic fabrics when it's hot. I hate how hot and sweaty they can make you feel - gross!

Fabric type is key!

My number one tip would be to make sure you find a dress where the fabric is something light, airy and where possible, natural (such as linen or silk). This can be tricky as a lot of the more budget occasion wear options tend to be made out of synthetic fabrics, so my tip is to go for a dress that is either floaty or made from a lightweight material.

Recycle your dress

If you're heading to a few weddings this summer, you might want to think about recycling one dress. Weddings are expensive, right? A few summers ago, I had three weddings during the summer and boy can the costs add up! A printed maxi dress is the perfect option if you want to recycle your look. You can wear it with heels, glam earrings and a box clutch for a more formal wedding and then if you have a more relaxed one coming up, swap the heels for an embellished pair of sandals and you're good to go!

Comfy footwear is a must!

You've found the dress, but now it's time to get the footwear sorted. The key thing here is the comfort. No one likes a hot, swollen pair of feet, so make sure you pick the correct fitting footwear for your feet. Try a wider fit if you struggle with standard sizing, think about opting for real leather instead of synthetic (helps with the rubbing) and think about investing in a slightly more expensive pair that you can re-wear. Opting for a lower, chunky heel is always a good idea, and I love wearing a closed, pointy toe heel - saves you from having to spend money on a pedicure!

Suits You, Sir.

Gone are the days when all you could wear to a wedding was a dress and a fascinator - thank god! Mix things up a bit and try out a suit! Suits are perfect for a more casual wedding, and jumpsuits are also a great option. I love wearing jumpsuits for special occasions, and I love the fact it's always a great conversation starter. Stand out from the sea of dresses and opt for something a little different.
My top tip is to dress your summer suit up with a silky strappy top underneath and a classy clutch bag.

Summer Accessories

Box clutches are perfect for a wedding. I especially love an embellished clutch bag, when you have opted for a more minimal look. Go for a statement bag if you want to jazz up your look! Changing your accessories is the easiest way to switch up a look if you are recycling your dress. Changing your shoes or your handbag is often cheaper than buying an entirely new dress.

You can't go wrong with a statement earring, and they are the easiest way to accessorise your summer wedding look. My top tip is to pick a colour out of your dress and try to a find an earring that matches.

2017, Let's Go...at your own pace.

Well here we are ladies and gents. It's 2017 and we've all been waiting for it with baited breath. How do we feel... excited? Ready and raring to go? Or are you scared of whats to come and you're still glued to the sofa?

I've had a very slow start and I think it's due to the fact I'm 30 and can't party like I used to haha. A hangover really affects me now a days and seeing as I went for it on NYE; I've been struggling ever since. I'm half ready and raring to go and half scared to venture outside and face real life.

I keep reading all these positive, life affirming blog posts and I've bought the life planners and new stationary for all those lists I should be writing but I'm not quite ready yet. That's ok right? I've got another 350+ days ahead of me and I know once I get my ass into gear; it's on!

If you're feeling like me and you're not quite there yet; it's ok. Take your time and don't beat yourself up about the fact you haven't got your shit together, you're still in the same pants as you were wearing on NYE and that new 'To Do' pad is still empty. We all go through life at a different pace and even if it feels like everyone around you is speeding off and already achieving great things; just know there are others around you *like me* that need a little more time.

We'll get there and it'll be beautiful. Hey, it can't be any worse than 2016!

Here's a cute outfit I shot just before Christmas but true to form; I've only just gotten around to posting it!

We don't always need to flatter our figures.

As women we have been conditioned to believe that the only suitable way of dressing is to flatter our figures. We've been told to accentuate/conceal parts of our bodies in order for us to look good. For me this "style rule" is a load of rubbish and I want to try and show you, that you shouldn't have to exclude yourself from trends or ignore certain styles; just because of your body shape.

I love boxy, over sized pieces and I am often drawn to these far more than the figure hugging, body con styles we so commonly see in plus size fashion. If I cast my mind back to the start of my blogging career; I lived in body con dresses. Tight dresses were my "thing" and I didn't really experiment with the shape or cut of tops/dresses.

I feel like these "unflattering" styles weren't as readily available to us as they are now and as my confidence to experiment with trends/styles grew; so did my need to try different shapes. I think my love of oversize styles started when I lived in Stockholm. I came across brands such as Monki and Weekday and fell in love. Over the years I taught myself to hunt in straight size shops for pieces that would fit my plus size body. More often than not; these were boxy, cropped or over size and this is where my love affair started!

Ladies, please remember:

You don't always have to wear a belt.
You don't always have to wear shape wear.
You don't always have to nip it in or smooth it out.

This shirt. This beautiful shirt is a clear example of how you can make straight size items fit even if your dress size exceeds the largest size on offer. I'd like you to hazard a guess at the size of this shirt. Have a look at my pictures and I'll reveal all at the end; you're going to be shocked!

The ASOS White collection is stunning and they have a lot of oversize items. Definitely try the range and let me know if you find something you love.

Lady Luck

I am forever in brightly coloured, printed clothing but sometimes all you want is that show stopper Little Black Dress. I actually really struggle to find the perfect LBD, I'm not sure why but I guess I'm really picky and I also find that plain black clothing tends to show up every one of my lumps and bumps. When I find one that I love, I wear it to death and I think that's going to happen with this dress.

The LBD is lovely on it's own but to take it to the next level I decided to style it with my gorgeous new black gilet with leather shoulders. If you tend to feel a little exposed when you wear sleeveless or strappy dresses; I can't recommend a jacket like this enough. Even though it is sleeveless it gives you the feeling you are a little more covered and it's super stylish to boot. I love the detail Elvi incorporate into their clothing - the leather shoulders, water fall front and the belt are all really nice touches. I think this gilet is perfect for a night out as you can just throw it on, it's very light weight and it's a really sophisticated style.

I also have to give a little shout out to my friend Felicity, who is a plus size model. She recently collaborated with Skinny Dip to produce this incredible Lady Luck bag and I am so happy that I am now in the possession of it! I love the flash or red and gold against my all black outfit.
